Vintage 1974 Seiko 6138-0040 Speedtimer Bullhead Chronograph Serviced Original
A distinctive example of Seiko’s 1970s chronograph design, the 6138-0040 is one of the more unusual watches to emerge from the Speedtimer era. Its warm brown dial, contrasting gold toned sub dials, Kunji/English day wheel and vertically positioned crown and chronograph pushers give it a character that is difficult to mistake for anything else.
This example has just been fully serviced by TEMPO PRIMA. The 6138-0040 is commonly known as the “Bullhead”, a nickname inspired by the placement of its crown and pushers at 12 o’clock. Rather than following the conventional layout of a traditional chronograph, Seiko placed the controls at the top of the case, creating a design that is both distinctive and practical.
The brown dial is particularly appealing, with its darker outer track, warm gold sub dials and dark orange chronograph accents. The combination gives the watch a distinctly 1970s character without relying on excessive decoration.
The case retains the broad, angular form that makes the Bullhead so recognisable, with original case lines and finish. While the original era bracelet completes the period correct appearance.
Serviced by TEMPO PRIMA, the watch has just undergone a full service, including complete disassembly, cleaning, inspection, lubrication and reassembly of the movement.
The chronograph has been checked and the watch is running well. As with all TEMPO PRIMA vintage watches, the emphasis is on preservation rather than restoration. The intention is to retain the character of the original watch, rather than make it look new.

A Note on Vintage Watch Ownership
Vintage mechanical watches are robust and reliable, but they are not as accurate as modern quartz watches and require periodic servicing. Some signs of age and natural patina should be expected and are considered part of the character of an original vintage timepiece.
At TEMPO PRIMA, we believe original watches should be preserved rather than restored. We do not pressure-test vintage watches and therefore cannot guarantee water resistance, regardless of their original specifications. For their long-term preservation, we recommend keeping all vintage watches away from water and excessive moisture.
